It is believed that Carmenere was imported to Chile from Bordeaux in the late 19th century but until 1994 it was believed to be, and sold as, Merlot. A member of the Cabernet family of grapes, the name “Carménère” originates from the French word for crimson which refers to the brilliant crimson colour of the autumn foliage prior to leaf-fall.
